Virginie Efira has sharply criticized modern film festival culture, targeting what she describes as widespread polite hypocrisy during official red-carpet screenings. Speaking in an interview with Variety, the Belgian-born actor and recent Cannes Film Festival winner argued that audiences today have become overly agreeable, contrasting contemporary reactions with the fierce, passionate debates of past decades.
The remarks follow a standout year for Efira, who in May shared the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival with Japanese actor Tao Okamoto for their performances in Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s film “Soudain,” as reported by outlets including Paris Match.
Reflecting on how audience behavior at major festivals has shifted over time, Efira did not mince words about the current atmosphere inside premiere venues. “Back then, people used to get furiously angry about films. They fought for Maurice Pialat! Today, everyone is so polite. People applaud for a quarter of an hour, even if they don’t like the film,” she told Variety, as detailed by Paris Match.

Rather than seeking universal approval for her creative projects, Efira emphasized that she welcomes polarizing reactions and deep critical debate from viewers. “I don’t expect everyone to like my films, and ‘Benedetta’ really divided the public. There are a lot of people who adore it and a lot of others who don’t understand it at all. You could really feel that in Cannes,” Efira explained, noting that she trusts her artistic instincts without viewing bold career choices as reckless gambles.
