VVD leader Dilan Yesilgöz himself has invented that thousands of refugees are coming to the Netherlands through reunification. When she stated this outright before the elections, she did so without any evidence. Much later it was conclusively established that the phenomenon hardly occurs and the problem invented by Yesilgöz does not exist. The VVD used the fantasy story as an argument for dropping the cabinet. Rutte was forced to resign from party leadership and Yesilgöz succeeded him.

Trouw has become obsolete that Yesilgöz deliberately lied about the numbers. This is evident from her own answers about the issue that she sent to the House of Representatives on Wednesday evening.

MPs from GroenLinks-PvdA, NSC, SP and Volt asked Yesilgöz if she could explain on the basis of which concrete information, documents, advice and conversations with experts she in an interview claimed that ‘thousands of people’ were piling up family journey after family journey. (…) In her answers to parliamentary questions Yesilgöz does not substantiate her offending statements about family reunification. The VVD leader writes that she based her opinion on ‘general figures about family reunification plus the total influx.’ However, these figures relate to the regular arrival of asylum seekers and refugees, not to the phenomenon of family reunification. Furthermore, Yesilgöz points out the status of the implementation of the IND. In this annual report, the IND points out that family reunification is an unintended effect of asylum policy. However, the IND does not mention any hard figures, the service only writes that it happens: ‘We see that the reunification procedure is also used to bring other family members here.’

In February it turned out that this concerns an average of seventy people per year. With 80 who qualify for it based on a different procedure. This concerns adult children of recognized refugees who want to join their parents and sometimes already have a family of their own.

Below you can see how, shortly after the fall of the cabinet, Yesilgöz spreads the fantasy story at the open microphone of talk show Op1. When the Volkskrant interviewed her four days before the elections and found out that the large-scale phenomenon did not exist according to experts, she lied flat out: “It concerns thousands of people – we don’t know exactly how many.”

The VVD made migration the focus of the elections. These were then won with flying colors by Geert Wilders’ anti-migration party, which further fueled migration fears. The VVD lost ten seats, lost its top position for the first time in 13 years and finished third.
