Slovak Prime Minister Fico Criticizes EU Policies, Predicts Escalation in Ukraine Conflict; Rubio to Meet with Orbán
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has voiced strong criticism of European Union policies regarding Russia, Ukraine, and energy imports, while also predicting further Russian advances in Ukraine. Concurrently, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to discuss peace initiatives and energy partnerships.
Fico stated that the conflict in Ukraine has already resulted in “100,000 deaths on the Russian and Ukrainian sides” and warned that continued support for Ukraine will only lead to deeper Russian involvement.He also strongly opposed the EU’s plan to phase out Russian fossil fuel imports by 2027, arguing it would be detrimental to Slovakia and othre nations lacking Liquefied Natural gas (LNG) terminals. “This will create big problems, as we do not have LNG terminals,” he saeid.
Regarding Ukraine’s potential EU membership, Fico echoed concerns raised by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, stating that Ukraine must meet all necessary criteria for accession. He argued that countries like Serbia,Montenegro,and Albania are “100 times better prepared” for EU membership than Ukraine. Fico also accused Kyiv of using oil transit to Hungary and Slovakia as “political blackmail.”
The upcoming meeting between Senator Rubio and Prime Minister Orbán will focus on “the peace process for resolving global conflicts” and the energy partnership between the United States and Hungary, according to the U.S. State Department. orbán has been a vocal critic of the EU and a strong supporter of former U.S. President Donald Trump. He was the first European leader to endorse Trump’s “Council of Peace” initiative,a proposal that has been met with skepticism as a potential replacement for the United Nations.
The United States granted Hungary a one-year exemption from secondary sanctions targeting countries importing Russian oil in late 2023. In December 2023, hungary signed an agreement with U.S.energy giant Chevron to import 2 billion cubic meters of LNG from the United States.
Trump has also publicly endorsed Orbán ahead of Hungary’s upcoming parliamentary elections, where Orbán faces a meaningful challenge from Péter Magyar, leader of the Tisza party. Recent polls indicate Magyar’s party is currently leading. Magyar’s party has recently accused the ruling party of a smear campaign involving a compromising video.
