HBO has released the first five minutes of its upcoming DC Universe series Linternas, offering a detailed look at the origin of John Stewart as a Green Lantern alongside Hal Jordan. The extended preview establishes the gritty, grounded tone of the upcoming television project while connecting the childhood traumas of Stewart to his eventual enlistment in the interstellar corps.
According to promotional footage shared by HBO ahead of its television premiere, the series introduces its lead characters without heavy exposition, utilizing a 1996 flashback sequence to anchor the narrative. In this opening scene, a young John Stewart watches a televised interview featuring a peak-era Hal Jordan, who recounts his historic assignment as Earth’s first Green Lantern corps member following a 1986 meteor intervention at Victoria Falls.
The sequence addresses the core ethos of the galactic peacekeeping force. When a television presenter asks Jordan what it takes to be selected, the hero explains that a child’s greatest fear is losing their parents, and once that happens, there is nothing left to fear—establishing the absence of fear as the absolute prerequisite for wielding a power ring.
Childhood Trauma and Family Conflict Shape John Stewart’s Origin
The flashback immediately puts this philosophy to the test in the Stewart household. After catching John and his siblings watching the broadcast, their father—a soldier—takes the young boy outside for a dangerous demonstration of nerve. Placing a piece of fruit on John’s head, the father draws a sidearm and asks if the child feels afraid. When John replies in the negative, his father fires a clean shot through the fruit, destroying it instantly before embracing his son.
