Geneva traders say they are fed up with the increase in demonstrations that block the city every weekend. Some lose up to 40% of their turnover.

This weekend, 2,500 people demonstrated again in support of Palestine. Repeated demonstrations which block transport and hamper business activity. In response, Genève Commerces wrote a letter to Carole-Anne Kast, as well as to other magistrates to raise awareness on the subject. “With these demonstrations which fall on Saturday, we arrive at losses in turnover which are significant and frightening. This must stop, because it has been going on for quite a long time,” explains Flore Teysseire, employer secretary. She also points to information “which falls completely unexpectedly, which is not possible”.

The magistrate in the City of Geneva took up the subject, as did State Councilors Pierre Maudet and Delphine Bachmann. For her part, Carole-Anne Kast did not speak out, indicates Flore Teysseire. Justice was taken to the city level: “There is freedom to demonstrate, but also economic freedom for our entrepreneurs who ask to work. We would just like to be able to carry out our activity in a peaceful manner and not be constantly blocked.” Flore Teysseire suggests thinking about other routes or other slots, preferably avoiding the Mont-Blanc bridge.
