Based on skull remains, British researchers created a 3D model of a female representative of a Neanderthal. The result is remarkable if only because the skull was flattened and the broken bones were as soft as a well-soaked biscuit when they were exhumed. written by the BBC.
The model is featured in the Netflix film Neanderthal Secrets, produced by BBC Studios. The documentary is about the Neanderthals, considered to be the evolutionary cousins of humans, who died out about 40,000 years ago.
The skull remains were excavated in the Sanidar Cave in the Kurdish-controlled area of Iraq. This is a long-known site, as early as the 1950s, the remains of ten Neanderthals, women, children, and men, were found here.

When a British group was recalled by the Kurdish authorities in 2015, they soon found a new skeleton with the upper body, spine, shoulders and arms relatively intact. The skeleton was named Sanidar-Z and included a severely flattened skull, presumably due to a rockfall. Cambridge professor Graeme Barker, who led the dig, said the skull was as flat as a pizza. They then started to assemble a model from this pizza.
The remains, along with the piece of land containing them, were transported to the UK and the big puzzle began. After assembling the skull, they made a 3D print of it, which was then given a face by Dutch artists Adrie and Alfons Kennis. The Dutch couple is recognized, and according to public opinion, they can faithfully depict our former ancestors from the various remains.
Based on the tests, a woman was found, which was inferred from the proteins in the tooth enamel. His short stature also supports this interpretation.
