The World Health Organization (WHO) warns of a military invasion Israel to the city Rafah in southern Gaza could lead to “bloodshed”. The UN health agency also announced emergency plans regarding Israel’s planned attack on Rafah.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously vowed to crush the remaining Hamas members in Rafah, where most of the population is located Gaza sought refuge from the war for almost seven months.

Reported by the news agency AFPSaturday (4/5/2024), WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned of possible negative impacts on the 1.2 million people displaced in Rafah.

“WHO is deeply concerned that a full-scale military operation in Rafah, Gaza, could lead to bloodshed, and further weaken the already damaged health system,” Tedros said in a post on social media X, previously known as Twitter.

In a statement, WHO announced emergency plans, but warned “a damaged health system will not be able to cope with the surge in casualties and deaths resulting from the Rafah attack”.

“This will in no way prevent the additional number of deaths and injuries estimated to be caused by the military operation,” WHO representative in the Palestinian territories Rik Peeperkorn told journalists in Geneva, Switzerland.

According to WHO, most health facilities in the Gaza region have been damaged or destroyed amid massive Israeli bombardment.
