Why Colleges Are Teaching AI to Every Major, Not Just Computer Science Students

Artificial intelligence literacy is rapidly becoming a core requirement across higher education as college students from diverse disciplines—ranging from psychology and music to biology—increasingly enroll in computer science courses, according to recent academic developments and enrollment data.

Driven by shifts in the job market and evolving employer demands, universities across the United States are overhauling curricula to integrate artificial intelligence education for non-computer science majors. This academic pivot occurs as hiring cools for entry-level software developers due to automated coding tools, prompting institutions to treat AI proficiency as a fundamental skill alongside traditional reading, writing, and mathematics.

Curricular Overhauls Across Major Universities

Academic institutions are responding to student demand by embedding artificial intelligence training into non-traditional degree programs. At Virginia Commonwealth University, senior psychology major Faith Maeba pursued a minor in artificial intelligence after observing how machine learning impacts human behavior in workplace environments. According to Maeba, gaining these technical skills provides an essential edge in standing out.

Balancing Rapid Adaptation with Academic Anxiety

The speed at which academic institutions are altering course catalogs represents an unusual shift for higher education. Paul LeBlanc, a visiting scholar at the Harvard Graduate School of Education who studies AI’s impact on higher education, noted that the pace of change is remarkable for a sector historically known for moving slowly.

Community colleges are moving at an even faster pace due to streamlined approval structures. Johnson County Community College in suburban Kansas City recently introduced a non-credit “vibe-coding” class and an artificial intelligence certificate program designed to tailor technical education toward specific professional sectors, including human resources and medical careers.

Despite the proliferation of these courses, the rapid integration of automated systems raises pedagogical concerns. Murtaza Ali, a doctoral candidate at the University of Washington focusing on computer science education, pointed out that while AI tools lower the barrier to entry for coding, they can also obscure foundational comprehension. When students rely entirely on AI to write code, the underlying logic and understanding of the task are often handled entirely by the machine rather than the student.

Nevertheless, students from varied backgrounds continue to find practical applications for AI within their specific fields of study. Althea Pappas, a music composition major entering her sophomore year at Virginia Commonwealth University, utilizes AI coursework to examine broader philosophical inquiries regarding artificial life, while biology major Makenzie Stovall studies machine learning to better understand neural emulation and brain function.
