Wiebes dominates Simac Ladies Tour with Stunning Stage Victories and Overall Triumph
Lore Wiebes of SD Worx-Protime delivered a masterclass in cycling prowess, securing a commanding overall victory at the Simac Ladies Tour. Her performance wasn’t just about winning; it was a exhibition of strategic racing, mental fortitude, and a team working in perfect harmony.
Wiebes understands the demands of a grueling season. “It’s a long season anyway,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of strategic recovery.”We’ve been going since the beginning of February,so it’s important too build in moments of rest now and then.”
A Refreshing Approach to Peak Performance
Following her success at the Tour de France Femmes, where she claimed two stage wins, Wiebes prioritized rejuvenation. She took time off to disconnect and refocus, recognizing the value of mental freshness. “After the Tour de France Femmes, I took some time off, took a step back and enjoyed life,” she shared. “That helps you to be fresh at the start, and you have to keep enjoying it.”
Maintaining a positive mindset is crucial for sustained success. “Mentally, I still feel fresh,” Wiebes asserted. “You have to, if you want to win.”
Stage-by-Stage Dominance
Wiebes’s form was instantly apparent, as she powered to victory in Leuven, besting a strong field including Elisa Balsamo and Clara Copponi. She then flawlessly defended her lead 24 hours later in gennep, out sprinting copponi and American rider Megan Jastrab after a decisive split in the peloton.
Her winning streak continued the following day into Zeewolde, where she emerged victorious from a 17-rider breakaway, once again leaving Jastrab to settle for second.
Stage 1 (Leuven): Wiebes wins, establishing early lead.
Stage 2 (Gennep): Wiebes defends lead in a tactical race.
* Stage 3 (Zeewolde): Wiebes secures another stage win from a breakaway.
Team Support and strategic Racing
While Wiebes consistently finished on the top step of the podium, she was speedy to acknowledge the crucial role of her teammates. Chiara Consonni nearly secured a stage win in Alkmaar, ultimately finishing second to Wiebes. However, the team celebrated a significant victory on Saturday when Consonni’s teammate,Zoe Bäckstedt, claimed the individual time trial in Westendorp, with Wiebes finishing a respectable ninth.
These strategic gains, combined with time bonuses earned throughout the race, allowed Wiebes to build a ample lead. She entered the final stage with a 48-second advantage over Balsamo, who had overtaken Jastrab as the closest challenger.
A Grand Finale and Historic Achievement
Wiebes sealed her overall victory with a powerful sprint in the final stage, crossing the line ahead of Nienke Veenhoven and Balsamo. The time bonus extended her lead to a decisive 54 seconds over Balsamo in the general classification.
She also dominated the points standings, earning double the points of her nearest competitor and securing two prestigious jerseys. “We wanted to finish in style and we succeeded,” she stated confidently.
This victory holds special significance for Wiebes. “Have I ever won five out of six stages before? Once, in the Baloise Ladies Tour,” she recalled. ”I also won five out of six there, but that wasn’t at WorldTour level. Hear in the Simac Ladies Tour it was, so I rate that even higher. It’s great to remain undefeated in the sprint.”
Wiebes emphasized the team’s collective effort. “We were determined to finish on a high note,” she said.”The only way to do that was to win this stage as well.”
She expressed gratitude to her SD Worx-Protime teammates, recognizing thier unwavering support. “This is a remarkable achievement by our team,” she concluded. “We’re definitely going to drink a glass of champagne to celebrate.”
