The thirteenth edition of New Music Competition (UMK) can go down in the history books. Windows95man won the national selection in Tampere, Finland earlier tonight. With the number No Rules! Windows95man tries to make a bid for a second victory for Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest. Finland will play in the first semi-final on May 7.
No lengthy preliminary rounds in Finland. The Finns have kept it very modest for almost ten years with a single final. In the final of MSE 2024 seven artists competed for the ticket to Malmö. One of the contenders was Cyan Kicks. The group already participated in the Finnish preliminary round in 2022 and came second.
As an interval act we got a performance from Katri Helena. This singer represented Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1979 and 1993. She then became resp. 14th and 17th. The group Kuumaa, which finished in fifth place in this preliminary round last year, also performed in the Nokia Arena. Between the announcement of the jury points and televoting, the viewer was treated to a performance by Käärijä (ESF 2023, Finland) and Erika Vikman (UMK 2020).
The outcome
The full results can be found in the table below. 25 percent of the points came from an international professional jury. The professional jury consisted of seven members, including Maléna (JESF 2021 winner, Armenia), Joker Out (ESF 2023, Slovenia) and Tvorchi (ESF 2023, Ukraine). The majority of the points came from the viewer at home. They had a say in no less than 75 percent.
Sara Siipola was the clear favorite of the jury. The singer received 70 points and thus built a comfortable lead of no less than 22 points. The public also appreciated her song with 203 points, but it was Windows95man who dominated the televoting with 285 points. Remarkable: the international juries placed the eventual winner in last place. Siipola, although she finished first among the jury and second among the public, had to settle for second place.
