The Rosas Silvestres Work Cooperative together with the Institute of Astrophysics of the Diego Portales University and the PROVOCA initiative of AUI/NRAO scheduled a series of activities between March 20 and 22 with the aim of highlighting this anniversary and highlighting the importance of the southern skies.

With the aim of bringing astronomy closer to school communities, talks will be held this Thursday at the Liceo Juan Bautista Contardi and on Friday at Escuela de Barranco Amarillo and Liceo María Auxiliadora by astronomers Érika Labbé, dissemination coordinator of the Institute of Studies Astrophysicists from the Diego Portales University (UDP); Alexandra Suárez, astronomer resident in Magallanes, member of Cooperativa Rosas Silvestres and mentor of PROVOCA; and the Magellanic astronomer, José Luis Prieto, Director of the Institute of Astrophysical Studies of the UDP.

Alexandra Suárez explains that “this 2024 marks 10 years since Astronomy Day was established and we wanted to join this celebration to highlight the importance of the Skies of Chile and Magellan together with the Institute of Astrophysics of the UDP and PROVOCA. We also thank the Magellan institutions that are collaborating with us: Seremi de Ciencia de la Macrozona Austral, Espacio community La Idea, Gyros Club and AGACI.” She also points out that “It is important to bring science closer to the community and in particular astronomy taking into account that currently the scientific and technological development around it is considerably impacting the management and storage of data worldwide, for example . This becomes more relevant even though it is expected that in the next decade, Chile will concentrate most of the astronomical infrastructure worldwide.”

Also within the framework of this celebration, talks will be held for the general public at the La Idea Community Space, on Wednesday, March 20 and Thursday, March 21 at 7:00 p.m.

In addition, you are invited to participate in an Inclusive Astronomy workshop that will be held at the AGACI Headquarters and in an astronomical-themed embroidery workshop, where attendees will be able to portray the southern skies, nebulae, constellations and supernovae.

The activities end on Friday at 9:00 p.m. with the discussion “Astro-Chela Magallánica: Astronomy, Beer and Chamamé”, which will take place at the Gyros Club.
