The World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) has launched the World Press Trends 2026-27 survey to analyze how global newsrooms are adapting to artificial intelligence, shifting revenue models, and threats to press freedom. The initiative seeks data from publishers to identify which monetization strategies are working and how AI is being integrated into editorial workflows and search discovery.
This industry-wide data collection focuses on the financial and strategic forecasts of publishers. According to WAN-IFRA, the survey examines cost allocations and the evolving relationship between news creators and tech platforms.
The project follows previous research into the “three-pillar” revenue model. By gathering anonymous data in English, French, German, and Spanish, the organization intends to map the global state of the press.
AI Integration and Newsroom Workflows
A primary focus of the 2026-27 survey is the adoption of artificial intelligence across newsroom workflows, monetisation, and search discovery. WAN-IFRA is collecting data on how AI influences these areas.
The survey seeks to determine how AI is being integrated into editorial workflows and search discovery.
Revenue Diversification and Financial Forecasts
The survey tracks the specific revenue streams driving publisher strategies. This follows the “three-pillar” model identified in previous WAN-IFRA reports. The survey analyzes cost allocations and financial and strategic forecasts.
Press Freedom and Global Threats
The 2026-27 data collection includes challenges related to press freedom, climate change, and evolving relationships with tech platforms and news creators.

Timeline for Results and Participation
The data is collected anonymously, and survey findings will only be reported in the aggregate. According to Dean Roper, Director of Insights & Editor-in-Chief at WAN-IFRA, the process is designed to provide a transparent view of industry trends.
Participants who provide their email addresses will receive the initial results of the survey (in a slide deck) in September. The final full report is scheduled for release in January 2027.
Readers and industry professionals can monitor official WAN-IFRA communications for the full report release in January 2027.
