Michele Mulroney Takes the Helm: Navigating a Hollywood at a Crossroads
By Sophiamartinez – October 5, 2025
The election of Michele Mulroney as President of the Writers Guild of America West (WGA) arrives at a pivotal moment for the entertainment industry. Her victory coincided with a important win for writers – the reinstatement of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after days of member protests against ABC’s initial suspension of the show. This immediate demonstration of the WGA’s collective power signals a proactive approach under Mulroney’s leadership.
“Our currency is words and stories, and the freedom to express ourselves is paramount,” Mulroney stated recently. “Our members are deeply committed to protecting this fundamental right, and we will utilize every available avenue – from vocal advocacy to strategic lobbying - to ensure it.”
Mulroney, a veteran writer with credits including the 2017 “Power Rangers” reboot and 2011’s “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” steps into her new role as the industry grapples with unprecedented challenges. A wave of consolidation, coupled with the allure of substantial financial incentives offered by international production hubs, is driving studios to relocate projects overseas, leaving many writers struggling to secure work in the wake of the hard-fought 148-day strike of 2023.
While the 2023 strike secured groundbreaking protections against the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in writing, the threat remains. Writers continue to face the reality of AI models leveraging their work without proper compensation or consent. As the WGA prepares for upcoming contract negotiations, Mulroney intends to build upon these initial AI safeguards and address a critical issue: the rising cost of healthcare.
“The companies need to be part of the solution,” Mulroney emphasized. “Their production pullback has considerably strained our health plan funds. We’ll be looking for their partnership in stabilizing this vital resource for our members.”
The question of another potential strike looms large. While Mulroney refrained from speculation, she acknowledged the challenging climate facing industry workers. “It’s incredibly challenging right now for everyone in the industry. But our members have consistently demonstrated their willingness to fight for a fair contract when necessary.”
