Sailor Lost in WWII Finally Coming Home After Decades
For over 80 years, the fate of a U.S.Navy sailor remained a mystery. Now, thanks to the tireless efforts of forensic experts, Petty Officer 2nd Class John Mullaney is finally identified adn returning home to his family. His story is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during World War II and the enduring power of hope.
A Long-Unanswered Question
Mullaney was serving aboard the USS Glennon,a destroyer, when it was attacked by Japanese forces near the Solomon Islands on March 12,1942. Tragically, the Glennon was sunk, and with it,the lives of over 70 sailors.Mullaney was among those missing in action.
For decades, his family held onto the hope of learning what happened to him. That hope has now been realized. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) officially announced Mullaney’s identification on August 29,2024.
The Path to Identification
Identifying remains from WWII is an incredibly complex undertaking. It requires painstaking forensic work, utilizing advancements in technology unavailable for many years after the war. Here’s how the DPAA was able to bring closure to the mullaney family:
Recovery Efforts: Remains believed to be those of unaccounted-for service members were recovered from the wreckage of the USS Glennon.
Forensic Analysis: Scientists from the DPAA used anthropological analysis and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) testing.
Family Reference Samples: Thes were compared to reference samples from Mullaney’s surviving family members.
Positive Identification: The combined evidence confirmed the remains were indeed those of Petty Officer 2nd Class John Mullaney.
A Family’s Relief
I’ve found that bringing closure to families of missing service members is profoundly impactful. Mullaney’s niece,Mary Louise Brambilla, expressed immense relief. “This will bring closure for our family,” she shared. “He will finally be coming home.”
Mullaney, one of ten children, was the last surviving member of his immediate family. His funeral will be held in his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he will be laid to rest near his parents. A rosette will be placed next to his name on the Walls of the Missing, signifying that he has been accounted for.
Honoring the Fallen
The story of John Mullaney is a testament to the dedication of organizations like the DPAA. They continue to work tirelessly to identify and return the remains of our nation’s missing service members. It’s a solemn duty, and one that provides a measure of peace to families who have waited decades for answers.
Here’s what works best when remembering these heroes: acknowledging their sacrifice and ensuring their stories are never forgotten. Their service and ultimate sacrifice deserve our deepest gratitude and respect.
