The engine should help the tech giant catch up with Tesla and BYD

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has set its sights on dominating the electric vehicle market and is already preparing new technology. The company made a splash with its first model – SU7, which broke all records for pre-orders in the Chinese market, and now it is preparing the next step that will allow Xiaomi to successfully compete with brands like Tesla and BYD.

The smartphone maker is developing a completely new electric motor that aims to revolutionize the industry and become a new benchmark in the sector. Its name is V8, although it is cylinderless and not an internal combustion engine. It is entirely Xiaomi’s development, and the Chinese firm has already filed 155 patent applications related to it.

The standard versions of the already mentioned Xiaomi SU7 are equipped with two engine options – V6 and V6S with a power of 299 and 347 horsepower, as well as a torque of 400 and 500 Nm, respectively. These bikes were developed in collaboration with Inovance Technology. The new unit – V8, however, has significantly more power – 578 hp. and 635 Nm.

Such a configuration not only promises electrified performance, but also positions the SU7 – and the other future models it will power – as direct competition to high-end models like the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT or Tesla Model S Plaid.

The next version of the Xiaomi SU7 with the new engine will be able to accelerate to impressive speeds, although the exact numbers are not yet known. Given that the most powerful version at the moment – SU7 Max with 637 hp, reaches 100 km/h in 2.78 seconds, the new version is expected to close to 2 seconds and surpass 300 km/h.

One of the notable features of the V8 electric motor will be its ability to reach 27,200 rpm, beating both the Tesla Model S Plaid’s 21,000 rpm and the Porsche Taycan Turbo’s 16,000 rpm.
