MODENA. «The Chinese car manufacturer Xiaomi communicated to Mimi that will not promote the SU7 carproduced 100% in Chinesewith the denomination “Modena”as highlighted so far in the media after the presentation event on December 28th Beijing».
The Ministry of Business and Made in Italy announced this in a note.

«The company – explained Mimit – has assured that it intends to respect the Italian rules on false indications, including the regulation on geographical indications. Communication and marketing campaigns that could mislead consumers will not be promoted. Mimit informed the company of the current legislation to protect consumers and national producers”.

The new electric vehicle will be called “Xiaomi SU7”, while “Modena” is only the internal name of a project, as well as the identifier of the architecture of the “Xiaomi EV Modena Architecture” platform.
He specified this in a press note Xiaomi Italy, after the announcement by the mayor of Modena, Gian Carlo Muzzarelliof having initiated legal proceedings against the decision to use the name of the Emilian city, the center of gravity of the Motor Valleyfor the new car.
«In relation to the recent news circulated over the weekend and the statements released by representatives of the national and local government – reads the note -, Xiaomi wishes to clarify that the name of its electric vehicle is Xiaomi SU7. “Modena” represents only the internal name of a project, as well as the architecture identifier of the “Xiaomi EV Modena Architecture” platform as announced during an event held in Beijing on December 28, 2023».
MAYOR MUZZARELLI SATISFIED
«We are satisfied with the company’s declarations which ensure that no car will have the name of Modena. In fact, it would not be tolerable to exploit a “brand” of value like ours in automotive sector (and not only) for products that have no connection with the territory and that are not produced here.”
Thus the mayor of Modena, Gian Carlo Muzzarelli, welcomed the communication received from Xiaomi. «Evidently, however, whoever thought of using the name Modena for a production platform, as has been explained, believes that it is a synonym of quality and capacity for innovation: we agree, that’s exactly how it is – continued the mayor –. The contents of this edition of the Motor Valley Fest demonstrate it once again: this is the capital of the Land of motors. But precisely for this reason, greater attention and respect would be needed when using the name Modena, even in relation to a simple production platform.
As a Municipality we are committed, together with all the subjects of the territorial system, to enhancing the “brand” also for the benefit of tourism. The Ministry did well by taking action at our requestuse the image of Modena and, more generally, of “made in Italy”. A heritage that we must safeguard throughout the world.”
