Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges Ahead of 2030 Targets
According to the latest report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the world added 310 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity in 2022, marking a record-breaking year for clean energy deployment. This figure represents a 17% increase over the previous year, outpacing the growth seen in fossil fuel-based energy sources.

Solar and Wind Lead the Charge
Solar energy accounted for 60% of all new renewable capacity installed in 2022, followed by wind energy at 30%. The report highlights that solar photovoltaic (PV) installations alone reached 163 GW, surpassing all other energy sources for the first time. “The solar revolution is here,” said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA. “We are witnessing an unprecedented deployment of solar technologies across the globe.”

China and Europe Drive Momentum
China continued to dominate renewable energy installations, adding 120 GW of new capacity in 2022—more than any other country. The European Union followed with 50 GW, while the United States saw a 20% increase in installations compared to 2021.

Job Growth in Renewable Sector
The renewable energy sector now employs over 13 million people worldwide, with solar and wind industries contributing the majority of jobs. The report estimates that by 2030, the sector could support 42 million jobs globally if current trends continue. “Renewable energy is not just about reducing emissions—it’s about creating jobs and economic opportunities,” said La Camera.

Challenges Remain
Despite the progress, the report warns that current trajectories still fall short of the 2,795 GW of renewable capacity needed by 2030 to meet global climate goals. She emphasized the need for improved grid infrastructure, policy support, and private sector investment.
Conclusion
The data underscores a pivotal moment in the energy transition, with renewables now the fastest-growing energy source globally. However, achieving the 1.5°C climate target will require sustained political will and accelerated deployment.
