One NZ⢠Expands Satellite connectivity with Direct-to-Cell Technology
One New Zealand (One NZ) is expanding its satellite connectivity service, initially launched for emergency texting, to include data accessâ and WhatsApp calling for eligible customers. This service⢠leverages Starlink’s Direct-to-cell satellite network, currently comprising over 650 satellites, to⢠provide coverage in areas where traditional mobile signals⤠are unavailable.
Data and Callingâ Capabilities
the expanded service allows⢠customers outside of One NZ’s⤠traditional âŁmobile coverage area, with a clear view of the sky, to access a selection of apps âand make voice calls through WhatsApp. âThis represents a notable upgrade âfrom the initial offering ofâ satellite â˘texting.
“Satellite texting changed the game for New Zealanders, who are now safer and better connected because of this service. But it⤠was always aâ starting point for One⣠NZ customers,” said Joe Goddard, Experience and⤠Commercial Director, One NZ.
“We’re now taking things to the next level rolling out âdata, âgiving customers withâ an eligible phone⣠and plan access to important information like weather and maps while outside â¤of traditional âmobile coverage – and letting them keep in touch with friends and family with satellite calling on WhatsApp when âthey have line of sight to the sky,” Goddard added.
One NZ states that its âsatellite-to-mobile⣠service covers approximately 40% of New Zealand’s â¤landmass, providing connectivity⣠in previously unreachableâ areas.
