Unusual things happen in China. A 5-story building floats on the Yangtze River. Hah? How come?

The building that is known as this restaurant is not actually floating. But this building was dragged by 2 towboats because it wanted to be relocated.

This building without electricity has received permission from local authorities to be moved by dragging it across the water. This phenomenon was caught on camera and shared on social media which immediately became popular in 2018.

Reporting from the Daily Mail on Thursday (1/2/2024) it turned out that the 5-story building was a restaurant called Impression Jiangjin. This restaurant was moved by the local government because it contributed a lot of waste to the river.

Apart from Impression Jiangjin Restaurant, there are 8 restaurants that were asked by local authorities to stop operating before June 16 2018.

According to Chongqing government research results since 2017, many customers throw rubbish on the riverbank after eating. Some of the waste that is thrown away is plastic waste and glass bottles which are difficult to decompose.

Impression Jiangjin Restaurant was moved to a new location in Fuling District, passing through the Chongqing area. Fuling District is said to have a high water level so it is a safe place to float a 5-story building.

Apart from polluting the river, the Impression Jiangjin restaurant’s move occurred after they got a new owner. The previous owner was unable to renovate the building because costs were hampered so restaurant operations were disrupted.

“It was only built a year ago (2017). So the owner wants to find a new owner (sell it),” said the former restaurant assistant.

When it was still operating, the Impression Jiangjin restaurant provided luxurious dining, a karaoke area, a large car parking area and a mini garden at the top of the building, as well as air-conditioned rooms.

Meanwhile, the new owner plans to turn the Impression Jiangjin restaurant into a water museum showcasing the history of the development of ships and shipping in the Three Gorges.

Quoting from the ichongqing.info site which was broadcast on (2/1/2019), it was stated that the Jiangjin Impression Restaurant has now been closed.
