“Purple Rain” Musical Announces Stars, Eyes Broadway Run
A new stage adaptation of Prince’s iconic film “Purple Rain” is set to premiere in Minneapolis, Minnesota, running from October 16th to November 16th at the historic State theater.Following this world premiere, the production has enterprising plans to bring the magic to Broadway.
Producers recently unveiled the two leading actors poised to embody the spirit of Prince and his musical world. These selections mark a significant step forward in bringing this beloved story to the stage.
Introducing the Stars
The musical’s casting team discovered Kris Kollins through a nationwide social media search. Kollins, a remarkably talented pianist and vocalist, will take on the central role inspired by Prince himself.
Rachel Webb, a captivating performer known for her soulful voice, joins the cast as Apollonia. You may recognize Webb from her recent portrayal of juliet in the national tour of “& Juliet,” which graced the Orpheum Theatre in May. She’s tasked with bringing to life the character originally played by Patricia Kotero in the film.
Kollins: A Prince sound-Alike?
Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, the acclaimed Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning writer adapting the show’s book, expressed immense excitement about Kollins’ talent. He noted being ”absolutely floored” by Kollins’ musicianship, vocal range, and undeniable stage presence.
Indeed, Kollins’ vocal abilities are strikingly reminiscent of Prince. Numerous videos circulating online showcase his impressive covers and tributes, demonstrating his mastery of Prince’s signature vocal agility. He effortlessly transitions between a gritty baritone, a resonant bass, and a soaring, ethereal falsetto.
Beyond the Tribute: Kollins’ Own Musical identity
Kollins isn’t simply a prince interpreter; he’s a burgeoning artist in his own right. His original music is a vibrant blend of R&B, pop, funk, psychedelic soul, and even bossa nova influences.
He released his debut EP, “pistachio,” last year and has contributed songs – “GSAW” and “River” – to the Paramount+ film “Noah’s Arc: The movie.” This demonstrates a diverse musical background that extends beyond tribute work.
What This Means for the Production
The casting of Kollins and Webb signals a commitment to authenticity and artistic excellence. The producers are clearly aiming to capture the essence of “Purple Rain” while also showcasing fresh talent.
With a Broadway run on the horizon, this production promises to be a major event for theatergoers and Prince fans alike. You can expect a captivating experience that honors the legacy of a musical icon.
