A Critical Moment for los Angeles: Why Hollywood Needs to Pay Attention to Charter Reform
los Angeles is at a pivotal juncture. A once-in-a-generation prospect to reshape the city’s governing document – the City Charter – is underway, and it demands the attention of all stakeholders, including the creative community in Hollywood. For decades, the charter has remained largely untouched, and the consequences of that inertia are visible in the challenges facing our city today.
The current Charter Reform Commission is doing important work, adhering to a process that’s historically been the city’s approach. However,a growing group of concerned citizens,including myself,recognizes a critical gap.The commission’s timeline and agenda are, frankly, insufficient to address the complex, long-term issues defining Los Angeles’ future.
We’ve formed Rewrite LA to supplement the commission’s efforts, taking on crucial conversations that aren’t currently being prioritized. These aren’t abstract policy debates; they are issues directly impacting the lives of Angelenos and the viability of our industries. We’re talking about responsible AI integration in government, proactive climate reform, meaningful police reform, tackling city corruption, and addressing the complexities of land use.These are the “hot button” issues people are talking about, yet they’re largely absent from the official charter reform agenda.
The commission appears to be avoiding these difficult discussions. This isn’t about criticism; it’s about recognizing the need for a broader, more forward-thinking approach. We aim to facilitate civil conversations, develop well-considered proposals, and present them to the commission next year, backed by a growing coalition of dedicated citizens.
Why Should Hollywood Care?
This isn’t just a civic duty; it’s a matter of self-preservation.The City Charter directly impacts how production operates in Los Angeles. A modernized, responsive charter can streamline processes, foster innovation, and create a more predictable habitat for our industry. Conversely, a continuation of the status quo risks further exacerbating the challenges we already face – rising costs, bureaucratic hurdles, and a diminishing quality of life.
The last charter revision was 30 years ago. the resulting framework has demonstrably contributed to many of the problems we see today. We cannot afford another three decades of inaction.
I haven’t yet launched a large-scale outreach effort within the entertainment industry,but I believe it’s vital. Many initially dismiss these issues as dry and technical, but the reality is they affect everyone. We need to break through that apathy and demonstrate the direct link between charter reform and the future of our work.
