The project centers around the deployment of 13 new outdoor small cells in Guildford city center, implemented through an innovative “open access” agreement.This approach, facilitated by neutral host provider Freshwave, allows Surrey County Council to maintain control over its public assets while enabling multiple mobile network operators (MNOs) to improve coverage.
But what are small cells, and why are they so effective? Unlike customary cell towers, small cells are compact units – roughly the size of a shoebox – designed to be discreetly integrated into existing street furniture like lamp posts. This minimizes visual impact, preserving the historic charm of Guildford’s urban landscape.
More importantly,small cells address a critical challenge in densely populated areas: network congestion. By processing mobile traffic at street level, they offload pressure from the wider network, allowing more users to concurrently make calls, send texts, and access data without experiencing slowdowns. this is notably crucial in high-footfall locations like Guildford High Street, around Guildford Castle, and near Guildford Station – all strategic deployment points for this project.
O2 Leads the Charge with a £700 Million Investment
The initial rollout is focused on enhancing connectivity for O2 customers, and is a key component of the operator’s £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan. Robert Joyce,Director of Mobile Access Engineering at O2,highlights the benefits: “This small cell deployment in Guildford is a great example of our plan in action. We’re bringing faster, more reliable connectivity to busy public spaces to meet record network demand, with targeted deployments delivering real benefits for communities.” Nine small cells are already live, and O2 reports immediate improvements in connectivity within these busy areas.
