Bison Return to Kane County, Illinois: A New Chapter for Prairie Restoration
A remarkable event unfolded recently with the reintroduction of bison to Burlington Prairie Forest Preserve in Kane County, Illinois. This exciting advancement marks a significant step forward in prairie ecosystem restoration and offers a unique prospect for the public to connect with these iconic American animals.
A Gift to the Prairie
The bison arrived as a generous donation, representing no initial cost to the Forest Preserve District. Ongoing care, including feed and veterinary services, is being generously provided by American International Charities (AIC) and Ruhter Bison. These partners are also contributing a modest annual grazing fee of $240 to the district.
The Forest Preserve district will cover essential utilities like electricity and water. Fortunately, existing infrastructure – restrooms and a picnic shelter – eliminates the need for bison-specific utility costs.
Patience is Key: Allowing Bison to Acclimate
While the bison are now residents of Burlington prairie, officials are kindly requesting public patience. The preserve seasonally closes its gates due to weather conditions. This temporary closure will provide the bison with crucial time to adjust to their new surroundings without disturbance.
Viewing Opportunities & Safety First
Once the preserve reopens, you’ll be able to observe the bison from outside a secure, fenced area. A convenient drive leads to a picnic shelter and parking, followed by an easy walk to the enclosure.
Remember these significant safety guidelines:
* Do not touch the electric fence. It’s in place for both your safety and the well-being of the bison.
* be prepared to explore. The bison may not always be instantly visible, so a short walk around the perimeter of the fence might be necessary to locate them.
Looking Ahead: Spring Events & Continued Access
Plans are underway for public events in the spring, coinciding with the reopening of the preserve gates. These events will offer a fantastic opportunity to learn more about bison and their role in prairie ecosystems.
Please note that parking is restricted to designated areas within the preserve. This is to ensure the herd manager has consistent access for animal care.
