From Displacement to Determination: How Education is Empowering a new Generation in Haiti
The situation in haiti remains incredibly challenging, marked by ongoing violence and displacement. Yet, amidst these hardships, stories of resilience and hope are emerging, especially through the power of education. This is the story of Dieussika, a young Haitian girl whose journey embodies the transformative impact of educational support in crisis situations.
A Return to Learning after Loss
Dieussika, like many children in Haiti, faced significant disruption to her education due to escalating violence. She experienced displacement, a common reality for families caught in the crossfire.However, thanks to targeted interventions, she’s not only returned to school but is now thriving and preparing for a brighter future.
She proudly shares her schoolwork with her family, demonstrating the joy and accomplishment that education brings. Her favorite subjects are French and mathematics, and she consistently strives for good grades to make her parents proud.
Education Cannot Wait: A Lifeline for Haitian Children
Dieussika’s success is directly linked to five months of intensive catch-up classes. These classes were made possible through the support of Education Cannot Wait (ECW), a United Nations fund dedicated to delivering quality education in emergencies and protracted crises.
Beyond academic support, the program offered valuable vocational training. Dieussika and her peers learned skills in crochet, leatherwork, and cosmetology, providing them with additional opportunities for self-sufficiency. “I had lost hope, but these classes gave me confidence again,” she recalls.
The Power of Education: A Pathway to Dreams
Dieussika’s story highlights a fundamental truth: education is not merely about acquiring knowledge; it’s about unlocking potential and fostering hope. She actively participates in her mathematics class,encouraged by her dedicated teacher.
She envisions a future where she can break the cycle of hardship for her family and inspire others to pursue their own educational goals. “I wont to become someone significant to help people,” she states with unwavering determination. “without school, we cannot achieve our dreams.”
A Plea for Continued Support
Dieussika’s message to global leaders and adults is both simple and profound: invest in children.She urges them to prioritize education and provide opportunities for young people to learn and dream. “Do not give up on children. Love them even more and give them opportunities to learn and dream.”
Unfortunately,many adolescent girls in haiti face unique barriers to education. these include safety concerns, caregiving responsibilities, and a lack of access to essential menstrual hygiene materials. Addressing these challenges is crucial to ensuring equitable access to education for all.

A Collective effort: Reaching Thousands of Children
The United Nations, in collaboration with Haitian authorities and partner organizations, is working tirelessly to provide educational and psychosocial support to children affected by the crisis. To date, these programs have reached over 17,500 children, with a particular focus on supporting girls – over 10,500 girls have benefitted.
for Dieussika and countless others, these programs represent a lifeline. They offer not just education, but a pathway to confidence, ambition, and a future filled with possibility.
