The race for Texas governor is taking shape as candidates align and refine their strategies ahead of the 2026 election. Recent developments suggest a narrowing field on the Democratic side, potentially setting the stage for a clearer challenge to the current administration.
Initially, several Democrats vied for the nomination, with Andrew White, son of former Governor Mark White, gaining early attention. Though, a significant shift occurred last Monday when White announced his withdrawal from the gubernatorial race. He pledged his support to gina Hinojosa, a move that consolidates the Democratic opposition.
According to reports from the Houston Chronicle, Hinojosa currently holds a commanding lead among Democratic voters. A survey conducted by Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research indicates she has secured 41% of the support, compared to White’s 6%. This demonstrates a clear preference for Hinojosa within the party base.
Despite internal polls suggesting a different outcome, White persistent that uniting behind Hinojosa offered the best path forward. He believes a focused effort behind a single candidate will maximize the Democrats’ chances of challenging the incumbent governor.
