Danish postal service PostNord is auctioning off 200 of its iconic red post boxes to raise funds for charity, marking the end of an era for traditional letter delivery in Denmark. The auction,running from January 16th to January 31st,offers a chance to own a piece of Danish cultural history while supporting a good cause.
The End of an Era for Danish Post boxes
PostNord ceased its letter delivery services at the end of 2025, with Dao now serving as the sole national letter delivery service. For over 170 years, from 1851 until 2025, the red post boxes were a ubiquitous sight on Danish streets. PostNord has donated 1,200 post boxes to Danmarks indsamling, a charity that supports people in need, and is auctioning off a final 200.
A Piece of cultural History Up for Auction
The post boxes originate from Post Danmark, the national postal company that preceded PostNord. As such, most are painted the classic red color historically used for postal infrastructure in Denmark.The auction includes not only the standard red designs but also specially decorated boxes and those from notable locations.
