Leprosy: A Curable Disease Facing Challenges of Stigma and Transmission
Leprosy, a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae, remains a public health concern despite being curable wiht multidrug therapy (MDT). while significant progress has been made in reducing new cases globally, challenges persist, particularly in overcoming stigma and interrupting disease transmission.
Global Prevalence and Recent Progress
As of 2024,172,717 new cases of leprosy were reported to the world Health Institution (WHO) from 188 countries,areas,or territories. Notably, 55 of thes reported zero cases, demonstrating the success of elimination efforts in certain regions. WHO Fact Sheet on Leprosy
The power of Multidrug Therapy (MDT)
MDT remains the cornerstone of leprosy treatment, providing a cure and preventing disability. The availability of free MDT, coupled with the drug clofazimine to treat lepra reactions (sudden, severe inflammatory episodes), has dramatically improved the lives of those affected, enabling them to continue working and living normal lives.
