New Nipah Virus Outbreak Confirmed in India, Vigilance Increased
A new outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus has been confirmed in India, with at least two confirmed cases reported and approximately 190 people under surveillance due to contact with infected individuals. Current Situation and Response
As of January 26, 2026, two patients have tested positive for the Nipah virus. Approximately 190 individuals who were in contact with these patients have been placed under quarantine,and those exhibiting symptoms are undergoing testing,according to Subarna goswami,the Deputy Director of Health for the Government of West Bengal,as reported by the ANI news agency.
The National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has activated emergency protocols, issuing a technical circular detailing the virus’s characteristics and urgent preventative measures. These protocols aim to contain the outbreak and protect the population.
Strengthening Hospital Safety Measures
The ministry of Health has directed hospitals in the affected region to enhance safety protocols. This includes mandatory use of complete personal protective equipment (PPE) for all medical personnel, addressing concerns about human-to-human transmission. The focus is on preventing healthcare workers from becoming infected while treating patients.
Experts caution that the situation remains active and that more cases may emerge. Goswami emphasized that it is premature to declare the outbreak over, stating, “Given the incubation period of Nipah, which ranges from 4 to 45 days, we will need to actively search for cases and monitor contacts.
