IAC and Wikimedia Spain Host Wikipedia Editathon too Highlight Women in Astronomy
The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) and Wikimedia spain are collaborating to host a series of events aimed at increasing the portrayal of women in astronomy and astrophysics on Wikipedia. This initiative includes a Wikipedia editing workshop and an editathon focused on biographies of female astronomers and astrophysicists, seeking to address content gaps within the free encyclopedia.
Workshops and Editathon Details
The program consists of two complementary events designed to be accessible to individuals of all skill levels, regardless of prior Wikipedia editing experience.
- February 6th: Wikipedia Editing Workshop – This practical workshop will cover the fundamentals of editing wikipedia articles, utilizing the platform’s translation tools, and creating new biographies from scratch.
- February 13th: Editathon – A collaborative editing session dedicated to translating, creating, and improving biographies of women in astronomy and astrophysics.The goal is to considerably expand the available knowledge on these figures.
Accessibility and Participation
Both events will be held in person at the IAC’s Central Headquarters in La Laguna, and will also be accessible online via Zoom, allowing participation from anywhere. The editathon will feature two editing sessions – one in the morning and one in the afternoon – providing flexibility for participants to choose the time that best suits their schedule or participate in both.
Participation is open to anyone interested in contributing to free knowledge and scientific outreach. However, spaces for in-person attendance are limited.Registration is available through the registration form, which also contains detailed information about the events.
How to Contribute
