Jesús ”Chus” Bueno Appointed CEO of Euroleague Basketball Amidst NBA Expansion Plans
Madrid, Spain – Euroleague Basketball has announced the appointment of Jesús “Chus” Bueno as its new Chief Executive officer, effective immediately. The unanimous decision by the Euroleague Commercial Assets (ECA) board of directors marks a pivotal moment for the organization as it navigates an increasingly competitive landscape, particularly with the impending launch of the NBA’s planned European league. Bueno succeeds Paulius Motiejunas, who served as CEO since June 2022.
Bueno’s appointment arrives at a critical juncture for European basketball. He is tasked with spearheading the league’s overall strategy, focusing on enduring business growth, expansion into new markets, and elevating the fan experience. A key objective will be solidifying Euroleague basketball’s position as the preeminent basketball competition in Europe.
“This decision reflects the board’s continued focus on strengthening the organisation’s governance and ensuring the effective execution of its strategic vision for the future,” stated Euroleague in a press release.
Bueno brings a wealth of experience to the role, cultivated through a diverse career in both professional basketball and sports administration. He previously held positions at the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), the National Basketball association (NBA) – serving as Vice President of EMEA and Managing Director of NBA Spain for 12 years – and the experiential services agency Legends. Most recently, he led the growth of DAZN’s basketball vertical. Reports indicate Bueno was selected over Michael Ilgner for the position.
Motiejunas’ tenure saw significant developments, including the expansion of the EuroLeague to 20 clubs and increased activity in the Middle east, highlighted by hosting the EuroLeague Final Four in Abu Dhabi. Euroleague Basketball expressed gratitude for Motiejunas’ contributions, acknowledging his commitment to the organization’s growth and success.
The leadership change is widely viewed as a strategic response to the growing influence of the NBA in Europe. Motiejunas had previously voiced opposition to the NBA’s expansion plans, stating the EuroLeague would “continue to fight” to maintain its position. However, with the NBA’s ambitions gaining momentum, Euroleague Basketball appears to be adopting a proactive approach.
Bueno’s extensive background with the NBA is expected to facilitate improved relations between the two leagues. This could perhaps open avenues for collaboration as the NBA enters the European market, while simultaneously safeguarding the interests of Euroleague Basketball and its member clubs. some clubs, such as Real madrid, have been linked with potential moves to join the NBA’s new European competition, adding further complexity to the situation.
the appointment of Bueno signals a commitment to innovation and sustainable growth as Euroleague Basketball prepares for a future shaped by evolving dynamics within the global basketball landscape. The league’s focus remains on delivering value to its clubs, partners, players, and fans, while reinforcing its position as a leader in European sports.
