HPV Vaccination Available in Egypt: Protecting Against Cervical Cancer and genital Warts
The Egyptian Ministry of health is encouraging citizens to take advantage of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, a preventative measure against several cancers and sexually transmitted infections. two types of HPV vaccines are currently available in Egypt, offering protection for both females and males.
What is HPV and Why is Vaccination Important?
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common viral infection that can cause a range of health problems, including genital warts and several types of cancer [1]. It’s primarily spread through sexual contact, but can also be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. certain high-risk HPV types can lead to cancers of the cervix, anus, penis, vagina, vulva, and oropharynx (back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils) [2].
Vaccination is most effective when administered before exposure to the virus, making it ideal for adolescents. Though, vaccination can still provide benefit to adults who haven’t previously been exposed.
Available Vaccines and Schedule
Currently, two HPV vaccine options are available in Egypt:
* A vaccine specifically for females: This vaccine protects against HPV types that cause cervical cancer.
* A combined vaccine for both females and males: This vaccine protects against genital warts and cervical cancer.
The vaccination schedule depends on the age of the recipient:
* Starting Age: Vaccination can begin as early as age 9.
* Dosage: The number of doses required is either two or three, determined by the individual’s age when the vaccination series begins [3]. Younger recipients typically require fewer doses.

The HPV vaccine is available through Vacsera (the Egyptian Serum and Vaccine Institute) vaccination centers throughout the country [4]. The Ministry of Health emphasizes the vaccine’s safety and efficacy.
