S&P 500 Hits Record as Scott Bessent Says Hormuz Deal Could Arrive Soon

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said there was a chance the U.S. could announce a deal with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz today or tomorrow, driving oil prices down and pushing the S&P 500 to a record high on August 4, amid strong artificial intelligence-linked earnings from major technology firms.

Wall Street reached significant milestones on August 4, as the benchmark S&P 500 hit an intraday record high for the first since early June, according to market reporting. The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average also climbed to a fresh intraday record, opening up 462.8 points—or 0.87%—at 53,641.21. The S&P 500 rose 30.1 points to 7,630.62, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 174.1 points to reach 26,088.042 at the opening bell.

The market surge followed comments from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent regarding ongoing diplomatic talks to resolve maritime blockades in a critical global shipping lane. Major quarterly financial reports from artificial intelligence heavyweights and industrial suppliers further reinforced investor confidence after weeks of summer volatility.

Strait of Hormuz Negotiations and Energy Market Relief

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday morning, Bessent indicated that Washington and Tehran could finalize an agreement to unblock the strategic waterway. The Treasury Secretary pointed to the administration’s stance that military operations had degraded Iranian air force, navy, and missile capabilities.

Oil prices dropped significantly in response to the announcement.

Despite the optimism expressed by U.S. officials, diplomatic channels revealed differing expectations regarding control of the waterway.

Palantir also advanced following positive market forecasts.

Strong quarterly results from mega-cap technology firms such as Amazon and Microsoft provided foundational proof that billion-dollar artificial intelligence investments were successfully generating cash flow returns.

Donald Trump stated on Monday that diplomatic discussions were actively underway with regional backing from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, following a decision to suspend planned military strikes over the weekend.
