A 14-year-old student shot and killed at least six people, including three teachers and three students, at Debsirin Nonthaburi School near Bangkok on Friday, August 7, 2026. The violence unfolded on a Friday morning at the campus in Bang Kruai district, Nonthaburi province, northwest of the national capital, sending students scrambling for safety as gunshots echoed through the hallways. Royal Thai Police spokesperson Trairong Piwpan confirmed the details of the shooting at the Debsirin Nonthaburi School.
Inside the Morning Attack at Debsirin Nonthaburi School
Emergency responders and volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation rushed to the campus after receiving initial reports of gunfire at approximately 10 a.m., according to Tuoitre. Witnesses described a scene of sudden confusion as students initially mistook the gunfire for firecrackers.
One 18-year-old student recalled hearing sharp noises coming from building number five before realizing the gravity of the situation. At first, I thought it was firecrackers or someone hitting something hard. But then we started to realize it wasn’t firecrackers, the student said, describing how the sounds escalated into repeated sharp reports before going briefly silent and starting again.
As teachers shouted warnings to evacuate toward safer buildings, students barricaded themselves inside classrooms. Pawarisa Maylissa, a 12th-grade student hoping to attend medical school, described hiding from the violence. I was so afraid that I would die, afraid that I wouldn’t be able to continue pursuing my dream, she said in interviews outside the school gates. I heard a lot of very loud gunshots, and could even hear bullets hitting the floor.
Casualties and Conflicting Reports on the Toll
Authorities provided varying initial counts as emergency personnel cleared the multi-story buildings and tended to the wounded. Provincial police commander Dechrapee Kongdee confirmed that the teenage suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after barricading himself on the third floor of a pink-painted building on campus.
While local reports initially cited differing totals, Police spokesperson Trairong later clarified that three teachers and three students were killed, with the suspect’s death raising the overall fatalities.
The injury count also drew different figures from government officials. Trairong reported 15 people injured, including two in critical condition.
Family Tragedy Preceding the School Shooting
Investigators discovered that the school attack was preceded by violence at the teenager’s home. Police travelling to the suspect’s residence in the Bang Bua Thong area of Nonthaburi province found two elderly relatives dead. Relatives and authorities identified the victims as the boy’s grandparents, who had raised him after his parents divorced.
The weapon used in both shootings was a CZ 9mm handgun registered legally to the suspect’s grandfather. Investigators recovered 26 spent casings at the school alongside 34 unspent rounds, while additional ammunition was discovered inside the teenager’s backpack.
Motive and Investigation Into the Suspect’s Background
Police examining the teenager’s computer history found that he had been searching for information regarding school shootings in the United States and mass shooters starting around July 30, more than a week before the attack.
According to family members, the 14-year-old was quiet, polite, and spent most of his time playing computer games rather than socializing outside the home. However, police interviewing a close friend of the suspect learned that the student had recently experienced heavy stress regarding his studies.
The tragedy has reignited public debate over firearm access in the country, following prior security incidents at educational facilities in Nong Bua Lam Phu and Songkhla province in recent years.
