A 47-year-old Michigan man, Kristopher Karolkiewicz, killed his wife, Amanda, and their six children, aged 5 to 15, before setting their Grand Haven Township home on fire and committing suicide on Friday, July 24, 2026. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office has officially classified the incident as a murder-suicide.
Firefighters discovered the bodies of the eight family members on Friday afternoon after responding to reports of smoke at the residence. While the home was engulfed in flames, autopsy results confirmed that Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, and the six children died from gunshot wounds. Kristopher Karolkiewicz also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The tragedy extended to the family’s pets. According to reporting from Fox 17, the animals died from smoke inhalation during the blaze. Other sources specify that the dogs and at least one cat were killed when the house was set on fire.
The Sequence of Events in Grand Haven Township
The discovery of the victims followed a disjointed series of emergency calls on Friday, July 24. Fire crews first received reports of smoke in the area on Friday morning; however, an initial check of the property yielded nothing. Approximately three hours later, more calls were placed, leading responders back to the scene where they saw smoke exiting the building and located the bodies inside.
According to some reports, police and fire departments were called shortly before noon near the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Upon entering the building, rescuers located the eight victims.
Investigators found that the fire was not accidental. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office stated that the fire was intentionally set at multiple points within the home after the murders had already occurred. While the arson is confirmed, officials are still investigating the exact point of origin for the blaze.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office issued a news release on Monday, July 27, 2026, stating that autopsies showed all family members died from gunshot wounds and that Kristopher Karolkiewicz committed suicide. The office had initially ruled the incident “suspicious” when victims were found to have suffered gunshot wounds before the home was set on fire.
Family Profiles and Professional Backgrounds
The victims included a mix of biological and adopted children. The couple had four biological sons, aged 15, 12, 11, and 5, and two adopted 11-year-old daughters. Amanda, known to many as Mandy, worked as a substitute teacher at an elementary school. The local school district described her in a January Facebook post as someone who responded to students with empathy, patience and care.
Kristopher Karolkiewicz had served as a vice president of sales and marketing at the American Heart Association (AHA) from September 2023 until early July 2026. The AHA confirmed his employment, noting that he worked remotely within a department focused on CPR and first aid training products. The organization did not provide specific details regarding the circumstances under which his employment ended.
The couple’s history dates back to 2008, when they met while working at a beverage company. According to a parenting blog maintained by Amanda a decade ago, they began dating that summer and married in August 2009.
Community Reaction and Support Efforts
The scale of the loss has left the Grand Haven community struggling to process the event. Superintendent Kristin Perkowski expressed the grief of the school system, stating that the Buccaneer family grieves alongside those impacted.
Becky and Steve Lawwill, parents and stepfather of Amanda Karolkiewicz, said that their daughter Mandy was a kind and devoted soul who loved her family and her students, and that they treasured every moment they had with her and her six children, adding that words cannot adequately express their devastation.
The Lawwill family noted that this was not the first tragedy to strike Amanda’s side of the family; in 2020, her adult half-brother died from an overdose. In the wake of the July 24 murders, friends of the parents launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover expenses and establish a scholarship in memory of the six children.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Appeals
Although the deaths have been ruled a murder-suicide and officials are not seeking external suspects, the investigation remains active. Michigan State Police arson investigators are continuing to analyze the scene to determine how the fire was started.
