President Donald Trump has nominated Project 2025 author Dennis Kirk to lead the Interior Department’s inspector general office. The appointment sparked immediate pushback from congressional Democrats and former watchdogs who warned the selection compromises the independence of an office tasked with reviewing a troubled Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool renovation.

The appointment immediately raised alarms regarding the impartiality of a watchdog body that investigators rely on to root out waste, fraud, and misconduct within the agency managing national parks, public lands, and Tribal programs.
Mark Lee Greenblatt, who served as Interior’s inspector general before being ousted in a mass firing of federal watchdogs at the outset of Trump’s second term, urged the Senate to reject Kirk’s appointment outright.
“Inspectors general must be able to investigate the administration that appointed them without fear or favour,” Greenblatt said in a statement, adding that “Mr. Kirk’s political background and close ties to this administration make it impossible for him to credibly meet that fundamental test.”

Greenblatt also criticized earlier reports that Kirk had already been installed inside the office in an acting capacity, arguing that placing a political operative inside an independent oversight agency creates a structural conflict of interest.
Scrutiny Over the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Renovation
Controversy intensified after federal prosecutors in Washington dropped vandalism charges against individuals previously accused of damaging the historic landmark, attributing the damage instead to faulty contractor work.
Senators Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Martin Heinrich of New Mexico previously asked the inspector general’s office to examine how the department handled the project. Yet watchdog groups argue the oversight office has been hollowed out.
Congressional Pushback and Broader Administration Patterns
Representative Jared Huffman of California, the ranking Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee, sharply criticized the appointment in a public statement.
“This man helped write the Project 2025 playbook for seizing control of the federal workforce. Now he sits inside the office charged with rooting out corruption at Interior, the department that manages our national parks, public lands, Tribal programs, and now under Trump, gold-slathered statues and a troubled Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool renovation.”

Huffman further characterized Kirk as a fake and fraudulent watchdog
and warned that each and every thing this political puppet does will be in service of Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, the Interior Department’s inspector general office declined to comment on either the Reflecting Pool investigation requests or Kirk’s appointment. With the nomination now before the Senate, lawmakers must decide whether to confirm a nominee whose background has intensified questions surrounding government accountability and transparency.
