LONDON – If you feel like all is not well with your Wi-Fi router, you’re probably not alone. As an expert from the telecommunications service revealed, the cause may be an object that you may have in your home. But forget about microwaves, televisions or game consoles.

Although it may sound like a bizarre conspiracy theory, a mirror is to blame for your internet connection problems. According to telco Virgin Media O2, this is actually something that can interfere with the signal from your Wi-Fi router. However, we are talking about large wall mirrors, not small pocket mirrors. The reason is that they are made of a thin layer of metal. If you leave the router anywhere near a mirror, make sure it is at least one meter away from it to avoid possible problems.

As the survey of the telecommunications company showed, the location of the Wi-Fi router is really diverse. The company asked 2,000 adults if they knew where they should place their Wi-Fi router. 41 percent of respondents admitted to keeping it next to or even behind the TV, 12 percent left it on the floor and six percent placed it under the bed. However, 45 percent of respondents agreed that they would rearrange their homes to strengthen the Wi-Fi signal.

Gareth Lister, director of connectivity at Virgin Media O2, told the Daily The Sun he said it’s best to place the Wi-Fi router in the area where you need the strongest signal. “Just like a cell phone, don’t expose the router to direct sunlight,” stated. This means that under no circumstances should you place the router on window sills, for example, because otherwise there is a risk of overheating.
