The wishes

She didn’t know where and how to start, but what she does know is how she wants it to be. ‘I would like a warm and bohemian atmosphere with lots of wood tones, so that it has a nice flow from the interior indoors.’

She also has her wishes in order in terms of planting. She wants lots of greenery with enough winter-perennial plants, so that it remains covered all year round and does not become bare.

A Mediterranean garden with several seating areas

To extend the warm bohemian atmosphere from inside to outside, Tom has created a nice terrace on the house side. Working with two different tiles creates a nice contrast. The tiles with the subtle floral motif make it look like there is a cozy rug.

At the back of the garden, a second seating area has been created against the shed with a beautiful, sleek wooden deck. Here Ingrid can relax in the morning or evening sun.

Semi-paving has been chosen between the two terraces and at the entrance at the back of the garden, so that excess rainwater can easily drain away (unlike tile paving). The light beige ‘castle gravel’ is quite fine and has a slightly sandy feel, which of course contributes to the Mediterranean atmosphere that makes Ingrid so happy. A nice bonus: the gravel has no sharp corners, so you can walk on it with your bare feet!

The weathered fences have been given a beautiful natural look because they are covered with fence elements made of woven willow wicker.

The borders along the edges of the garden are laid out in beautiful organic shapes. This provides an extra playful contrast with the sleek decking and straight lines of the terrace. The border edges are slightly raised with steel strips that are easy to install in round shapes. In the borders, several sets of chestnut poles of different thicknesses and lengths have been driven into the ground, which gives the garden an extra natural touch.

Tom has planted some beautiful climbing plants against some of these posts, including the Honeysuckle (Lonicera henryi). This climbing plant grows quite exuberantly with many offshoots and wonderfully scented flowers. So in a while the pole construction and part of the fence will be covered in nice green and colorful.

Furthermore, the borders are well filled with lots of greenery, including the Fatsia japonica, also known as the finger plant. They are still low at the moment, but soon they can grow up to three to four meters high. Several mahogany bushes (Mahonia eurybracteata) have also been planted together, which will soon grow to a height of about one meter. An extra nice thing about these shrubs is that they bloom in winter with fresh yellow flowers, so that the garden has color all year round.

Ultimate holiday atmosphere

Since Ingrid wanted a bohemian holiday atmosphere in her garden, Tom went all out with the planting. For example, he planted two beautiful Chinese fan palms. These originally come from the Himalayan mountains, so they can withstand cold and wind well. In other words: very suitable for our climate!
