The pressure to integrate AI isn’t limited to a single sector. Recent reports highlight a mandate at Electronic Arts requiring developers to use AI. This push extends far beyond coding. Individuals are reporting being steered towards AI solutions in everyday internet experiences, from social media platforms to general web browsing.
Social media platforms like X and Bluesky are filled with users voicing frustration, using hashtags like “#forcedtoUseAI.” The trend began gaining momentum with the rise of ChatGPT and the subsequent “AI gold rush,” but researchers have identified a deliberate strategy at play.
Deceptive Design & The Push for ROI
Design academics Anaëlle Beignon,thomas Thibault,and Nolwenn Maudet recently published a paper,”imposing AI: Deceptive design patterns against sustainability,” detailing this shift. They argue tech companies are actively employing UX/UI tactics to promote AI adoption,going beyond simple marketing.
These companies are presenting AI as ”revolutionary” through extensive media coverage. More subtly, they’re leveraging interface design to nudge users toward AI-powered features. This is happening despite the fact that many enterprises haven’t fully scaled AI implementation.
A recent McKinsey survey reveals nearly two-thirds of companies haven’t yet integrated AI across their organizations. This creates pressure to demonstrate a return on investment (ROI) for expensive AI enterprise licenses.Mandates, thus, become a way to justify those costs – a trend mirrored even within major AI vendors like Meta.
Why the Resistance?
Despite the corporate push, many users simply want nothing to do with AI.Concerns center around:
* Ethical implications: the potential for bias and misuse.
* Accuracy: The risk of errors and “hallucinations” (AI generating incorrect details).

Industry veteran Vandervort acknowledges this problem. He explains that while AI can be helpful, it can also short-circuit the crucial learning cycle of hands-on coding and expert feedback.
“The best way to learn is still with hands-on coding and getting feedback from someone who knows more,” Vandervort states. “AI is short circuiting that entire cycle and that’s a problem.” He admits he doesn’t yet have a solution, highlighting the complexity of the issue.
