Alan Wake II has sold 1.3 million copies – Gaming – News

It is advisable to know something about part 1 and the expansion American Nightmare. But in my opinion the gameplay is not very strong in those older parts: simple, a bit outdated and with a lot of repetition. Story and atmosphere are very interesting. Personally, I would say: watch a summary on YouTube, and then play the new game because the gameplay is infinitely smoother, more modern and more varied.

It really helps if you’re a fan of Twin Peaks and David Lynch, and love The X-Files and the SCP Foundation. Those kinds of stories were the inspiration for Alan Wake.

On-topic: 1.3 million sold is relatively high for Remedy, but the development costs of this game were also high (not extremely high for AAA, but 50 million + marketing). I don’t think they’re out of pocket yet. Alan Wake remains a bit niche, despite the now greater attention due to awards and the like. Psychological horror doesn’t sell like the most popular genres, and Alan Wake 1 was a long time ago and that game didn’t sell hugely either. The wider audience is not very familiar with Alan Wake and the style does not appeal to everyone. Let’s hope that this special studio can continue to make these types of games in the future.
