“The Wolf” – A Deep Dive into a European Co-Production Success story
“The Wolf” represents a notable achievement for producer Nima Yousefi, CEO of Hobab, a Swedish production company known for championing distinctive cinematic voices. Hobab previously brought us the Venice Horizons winner “Paradise Burning” and served as a co-producer on the 2025 Oscar-nominated “The Apprentice.” Yousefi’s decade-long commitment to director Nathalie Mesén underscores his dedication to supporting unique artistic visions.
This dedication was instrumental in attracting a stellar creative team and securing complex, multi-territory financing for “The Wolf.” Yousefi believes Mesén’s singular style, first showcased in her acclaimed debut “Clara Sola” – lauded by Variety as “spellbinding” – was the key to unlocking this level of support.
A Truly International Collaboration
The film’s production is a testament to the power of international co-production. Key partners include:
* Resolve Media (U.S.)
* Quiddity Films (U.K.)
* Need Productions (Belgium)
* Still Vivid (Iceland)
Financing for “The Wolf” is equally diverse, drawing from both public and private sources. These include:

Prioritizing Artistic Vision Through Funding
A significant, undisclosed budget allowed Mesén to fully realize her ambitious vision for the film. Extensive location scouting,spanning 15 countries,ultimately led the production to Belfast,Northern Ireland. Yousefi noted the surprising similarity between the Northern Irish landscape and the Pacific Northwest’s temperate rainforests.
Building the british widower’s house – both its exterior and interior – presented a significant logistical challenge. However, this commitment to practical sets has resulted in a seamless and authentic viewing experience. Yousefi emphasized the strong collaborative relationship between Mesén and the heads of department from the project’s inception.
Empowering the Director’s Voice
Protecting Mesén’s creative freedom was paramount throughout the production. Yousefi believes this is a key benefit of the European funding model. This approach allowed the team to nurture a unique artistic vision without compromise.
Currently, the team is completing the final two days of shooting in the Göteborg area of Sweden. Post-production will include visual effects work to further enhance the film’s impact.
Distribution and Release Plans
TriArt, a leading arthouse distributor in Sweden, will handle the domestic release. International distribution plans are currently being finalized and will be announced shortly, according to Yousefi.
“The wolf” stands as a compelling example of how international collaboration and a commitment to artistic vision can result in a truly remarkable cinematic experience. It demonstrates the strength of the European funding model in supporting filmmakers with bold and original stories to tell.
