Tunisia defeats Algeria 33-24 in the 27th CAN handball Championship semi-final, extending their winning streak against their North African rivals too 12 years.
The Tunisian national handball team secured a decisive victory over Algeria, 33-24, in the semi-final of the 27th African Nations Championship (CAN) held in Cairo, Egypt. This marks the 6th time Tunisia has defeated Algeria at this stage of the competition, and continues a 12-year winning streak against their neighbors. The win propels Tunisia into the final against egypt.
The match saw Tunisia take control early, establishing a critically important lead within the first five minutes. Despite a 3-3 start,Algeria faltered,exhibiting a slow offensive game,ineffective shooting,and defensive vulnerabilities. These weaknesses were quickly exploited by the Tunisian team, who surged ahead to a 13-5 lead. Tunisian goalkeeper Mehdi Harbaoui delivered a standout performance with numerous saves, while his Algerian counterpart, Khelifa Ghedhbane, struggled to contain the Tunisian attack. By halftime, Tunisia had established a commanding 19-11 lead.
Missed Chance for Algeria
The second half saw a slight dip in Tunisia’s performance, but Algeria was unable to capitalize. A glimmer of hope emerged for Algeria at the 45th minute when Nouri Benhalima found himself with a clear shot on goal after a clever feint. However, Harbaoui once again proved decisive, saving the attempt. This missed opportunity proved pivotal, as Algeria quickly fell further behind, ultimately unable to close the gap. The final score stood at 33-24 in favor of tunisia.
Tunisia will now face Egypt in the final on Saturday,after Egypt defeated Cape Verde 32-26 in the other semi-final. algeria will compete for the bronze medal against Cape Verde on Friday at 15:30.
