Alicia Silverstone is officially returning to her iconic role as Cher Horowitz in a new limited series ordered by Paramount+. The project marks a homecoming for the intellectual property, as the cult-classic 1995 teen comedy film was originally released by Paramount Pictures. According to sources cited by Variety, the streaming service has given the show a six-episode order.
Paramount+ Greenlights Clueless Sequel Series Starring Alicia Silverstone
Production on the sequel series is slated to begin in Los Angeles in 2027. Jane Wiseman, Head of Originals for Paramount+, stated, Clueless is coming home.
Wiseman added, Thirty-one years ago, Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz captivated audiences with her signature chic style, sharp wit and relentless optimism, helping make Clueless a box office hit and instant pop culture classic.
Plot Details and Production Team
Set in the present day, the project picks up three decades after the events of the original film. The official logline for the series states: Beloved Beverly Hills icon Cher Horowitz has figured out a lot: She’s successful in business and has mastered motherhood—that is, until her daughter’s high school years, and Cher finds that parenting a teenager makes her feel ‘clueless’ all over again.
The series is written by Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss. Schwartz and Savage produce via their Fake Empire banner, known for work on The OC and Gossip Girl, while Weiss brings experience from Freakier Friday and Dollface. Executive producers include Schwartz, Savage, Weiss, and Silverstone, alongside the original film’s writer and director, Amy Heckerling, and original producer Robert Lawrence. CBS Studios will handle production.
From Peacock to Paramount+
The green light from Paramount+ follows a lengthy journey by CBS Studios to bring a new series based on the movie to screens. The studio initially developed a project centered around Dionne, a character originally played by Stacey Dash, which went to Peacock for development in 2020 before not moving forward. CBS Studios subsequently developed a sequel series centered on Silverstone’s Cher with Schwartz, Savage, and Weiss, which landed at Peacock in April 2025 before the NBCUniversal streamer passed on it a year later.
Following a regime change at Paramount after Skydance’s August 2025 acquisition, the new Paramount+ team tracked the available project and took action. The show will now be produced solely by Paramount-owned CBS Studios, without Universal Television, which had previously been attached as a co-studio when the project was at Peacock.
Franchise History and Context
The 1995 film Avclub was loosely adapted from Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma and followed Cher Horowitz, a wealthy and popular California student at Bronson Alcott High. The film featured an ensemble cast that included Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, Elisa Donovan, Breckin Meyer, and Dan Hedaya.
A previous television adaptation ran for three seasons from 1996 to 1999, airing on ABC and then UPN, with Rachel Blanchard playing Cher because Silverstone was unavailable, while Dash reprised her role as Dionne. Recently, the original film celebrated its 30th anniversary with a screening at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and was added to the US National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
