There’s another in the endless series of Mario games. A remake of Mario vs Donkey Kong this time. A game that guarantees puzzle fun.

Where do we know Mario vs Donkey Kong from?

From the Gameboy Advance. Do you remember that device? One of Nintendo’s early handy game consoles to which you had to attach a separate light if you wanted to game in the evenings. Twenty years ago Mario and Donkey Kong appeared together in a puzzle adventure, now it’s time for the polished version for the Switch.

What is it about?

The tiny story is secondary, but Donkey Kong wants to buy a mini Mario and they appear to be sold out. This results in an angry monkey, who invades the toy factory and steals all the mini Marios. Of course, big Mario can’t ignore that.

What should you do?

Free Mini Marios in eight worlds, two of which are completely new. Each world contains six normal levels. You have to puzzle to get to a key that opens a door to the mini Mario. By pressing buttons, jumping on enemies, swinging between ropes and horizontal bars and thinking carefully, you can reach the keys. After the six levels there is a level in which you have to guide the less mobile mini Marios to a chest. If this is successful, another battle with a final boss will follow. Sometimes you throw pelts at him, other times you drop rubbish on him. Once Donkey Kong is defeated, he flees to the next world.

Is it challenging?

The further you go, the more difficult the levels. It becomes really difficult when you have completed the eight levels and are ready for the extras. In the plus worlds a mini Mario carries the key. Then you have to pay attention to two figures. Another extra is the time attack. The name says it all. Normally a timer is already running, but in this mode the time is limited. And then there are the expert levels. These are really difficult, because you have little time to overcome certain obstacles. You can unlock these levels by collecting three gifts in the normal levels, for which you receive gold stars.

Can you also play together?

Sure, a Toad will appear on the screen and you can do puzzles together.

Does the game resemble the original Mario games?

In terms of gameplay it is quite different, but of course the influences of the traditional platform game are visible everywhere. Take the lava world, which every Mario lover knows. It all looks very Mario, you also have to jump, climb, duck and get away. Only in puzzle form.

Does the game have a long lifespan?

This is really an addictive puzzle game that you put aside out of frustration because a level is just too much for you. Only to pick up the Switch again a little later to crack that puzzle. With the extra challenges you unlock, there is plenty to do. A remake is therefore in order.
