The career of André van Duin (77) spans sixty years this spring. In honor of this, the book ‘All about André’, which Jan Vriend wrote about the comedian and presenter, is being published today. “Sixty years in the business, that’s quite something. Although in retrospect it really flew by.”
“It’s still going well, much to my own astonishment”
This is not the first book about André, who once started as a comedian, but is now active as a presenter. “It is now the fourth book. Jan came up with it, he wanted to make a nice book with anecdotes.” It remains ‘sweet and nice’ that people do that for you, says the presenter.
André knows Jan well. “So there was no reason to say: I won’t do that. I trust Jan completely.” André says he is happy with the result. “It has become a fun, readable flip-through book.”
Sixty years in the spotlight is quite a long time, André thinks. “I was on television for the first time in 1964, then it started rolling. And it is still going successfully, to my own astonishment.” He has even made a career change in recent years. “I went from hats and caps and carnival to presenter and actor.”
That’s something he wouldn’t have dared to believe ten years ago. “After fifty years in the business, I thought: now it has happened. But Jan Slagter from Omroep MAX gave me the opportunity to do something different.” The comedian asked for that All of Holland Bakt to help present. “And I didn’t like it at first, but to my amazement it became a great success.”
André certainly has no plans to stop yet. “As long as you can physically maintain it, you should do it. This is how you remain part of society. Of course you have to be physically able, if that is not the case then it ends. But fortunately that is not the case yet.”
