A 17-year-old American pilot, Ethan Guo, has been released from detention in Chile after making an unscheduled landing in Punta Arenas. he was attempting a solo flight around the world to all seven continents when the incident occurred. The Incident and Initial Detention
Guo landed his aircraft on Saturday, arriving aboard a Chilean navy ship. He was initially detained by authorities, sparking questions about the legality of his landing and flight plan. He appeared amicable with the press, downplaying the experience as “mundane” despite “limited freedoms.”
His lawyer, Jaime Barrientos, explained that Guo diverted to Punta Arenas due to adverse weather conditions. He asserts that Guo had received the necessary authorization from Chilean authorities prior to landing.
Though, authorities arrested Guo as he prepared for takeoff back to Punta Arenas. Barrientos characterized the arrest as an overreaction, stating it was “a total exaggeration.”
