Atos Doubles Down on UK public Sector with Sovereign Infrastructure & AI Focus
Atos, a global leader in digital conversion, is making a notable strategic push into the UK public sector, underpinned by a £1.3 billion portfolio of existing contracts adn a newly launched suite of sovereign infrastructure centers. This move isn’t simply about geographic location; it’s a deliberate effort to address growing concerns around data security,sovereignty,and the critical need for secure Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities within government and critical national infrastructure.
Addressing the Rising Demand for Data Sovereignty
Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in geopolitical instability and cyber threats. This has fueled a demand for data sovereignty – the assurance that data is stored and processed within a nation’s borders, under its laws, and with its security standards. Atos is responding directly to this need.
The company is actively reassuring clients that thier data is protected with what they describe as “military-grade security.” This commitment is backed by substantial investment in UK-based infrastructure, designed to meet the highest levels of government accreditation.
New Sovereign Centers & existing Security Infrastructure
Atos has established three new “sovereign” centers within the UK:
* Orchestration Hub: Manages and coordinates complex IT operations.
* Digital agentic Center: Focuses on smart automation and AI-powered services.
* Digital Enablement center: Provides the tools and support for digital transformation.
These centers complement Atos’s existing high-security infrastructure, including a certified List X facility in andover. This facility is already accredited by the UK government to the most stringent security levels. crucially, these facilities are staffed entirely by UK-based personnel with the necessary security clearances.
“It’s different to when people say onshore,” explains Michael Herron,recently appointed CEO of Atos UK. “We’re not just building centers in the UK; we’re building a fully sovereign ecosystem for the UK.”
A CEO with Deep Public Sector Roots
Herron’s appointment is particularly strategic. His background includes a distinguished career as a civil servant within the Ministry of defense (MoD), followed by 14 years working on government contracts at ICL (now part of Fujitsu). This experience provides Atos with invaluable insight into the unique needs and challenges of the UK public sector.
“There’s plenty of opportunity in government,” Herron stated in an interview with Computer Weekly. “While we’re not seeing massive growth out there in the market, there is growth and plenty to go after.”
Atos’s Current Footprint in the UK Public Sector
Atos already holds a significant position within the UK public sector, boasting 37 live contracts worth a total of £1.3 billion.Key clients include:
* Ministry of Defence (MoD)
* HM Revenue & customs (HMRC)
* Department for Surroundings, Food & Rural affairs (Defra)
* National Savings and Investment Bank (NSIB)
The company’s largest UK public sector contract is with the NSIB, valued at £475 million over three years for IT outsourcing services. Recent wins include a major digital workplace services deal with Defra, alongside ongoing testing services for HMRC and request development/support for the Home Office.
The Rise of Sovereign AI
Herron emphasizes the growing importance of “sovereign AI capabilities,” particularly for organizations operating in the public,defence,and critical national infrastructure sectors. The rapid adoption of AI necessitates a secure and controlled environment for its development and deployment. Atos is positioning itself to deliver precisely that.
Increased Competition in the UK Public Sector IT Landscape
Atos isn’t the only company recognizing the potential within the UK public sector.Indian IT giants Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys are also aggressively expanding their presence.
