Baia Mare City Hall must demolish the wall of segregation of the Roma population in the municipality, after a final decision of the court, from February 14.

The action was opened by the activist Mugur Vărzariu who in May last year announced on his blog that he had won the demolition of the wall in the first instance. The town hall led at that time by Cătălin Cherecheș, meanwhile convicted for corruption, appealed but the action was definitively rejected.

Activist Mugur Vărzariu also owns the Loving Colors Association, with whom Baia Mare City Hall and the National Council for Combating Discrimination acted in court, and is known for his involvement in combating discrimination and respecting human rights.

In 2011, Cătălin Cherecheș was elected mayor of Baia Mare, after serving as an independent deputy. Shortly after becoming mayor, he erected a wall to separate the social blocks in the municipality, where the Roma population lives, from the rest of Baia Mare’s residents. The Council for Combating Discrimination fined the mayor and recommended that he tear down the wall, but the construction remained in place.
