Financial pressures, an outstanding pandemic-era loan, and a notable drop in demand for information technology professionals in the Bern region have combined to challenge the organization’s operational model.
According to reports from the Berner Zeitung, founders and management are working alongside regional authorities and industry stakeholders to protect the educational futures of the affected youth. While company leadership stresses that formal bankruptcy proceedings are not imminent, the institution’s ongoing viability has forced a structured reassessment of how technical apprenticeships are financed and delivered in the local market.
A Vulnerable Pipeline Model
The core vulnerability in BiCT AG’s structure stems from its unique pipeline configuration. Under normal operations, the enterprise trains ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and Mediamatics apprentices during their initial two years.
Subsequently, the learners transition into external partner companies or complete structured internships where partnering businesses help subsidize the training costs. Company founder Armin Wyss noted that this financing framework is no longer economically sustainable under current market conditions.
Macroeconomic Strains and AI Adoption
Wyss attributed the structural strain to a broader cooling of the regional tech employment market. He cited a difficult macroeconomic climate, the rising adoption and efficiency gains of artificial intelligence tools, and conscious spending cuts implemented by federal offices and Swiss Post.
These combined pressures have reduced the intake capacity and financial contributions of external partner firms. This directly undercuts the revenue streams required to support the instructional staff and facilities.
Emergency Round-Table Talks
Stakeholders across the Bern educational and economic sectors have mobilized to establish safety nets for the 120 impacted learners and ten affected trainers. On August 3, representatives from the Canton of Bern, BiCT AG, ICT-Berufsbildung Bern, and major training partners convened for a round-table discussion to chart transitional pathways for the students.
Official statements from BiCT indicate that these initial talks produced encouraging preliminary concepts. For Mediamatics apprentices currently in their first and second years, organizers are actively negotiating direct transfers to alternative host companies. Meanwhile, students in their third and fourth years are expected to complete their training directly within their existing placement organizations.
Cantonal Support and Upcoming Deadlines
To ease the transition, cantonal authorities have signaled willingness to issue unbureaucratic, temporary educational accreditations to local firms that have not traditionally acted as formal training businesses, permitting them to absorb displaced learners. Discussions are also underway to secure continuity for participants in the tenth ICT school year and the multimedia content creator programs.
A subsequent round-table conference is scheduled for late August to finalize these institutional transfers. Affected apprentices and their families are slated to receive definitive information regarding their specific academic placements during September.
