Now for real! Although the transfer window in Germany has been closed since February 1st, Borussia Dortmund is still announcing a deal. After days of negotiations, Thomas Meunier moves to Turkey.

+++ Star departure? Decision finally made at BVB +++

Borussia Dortmund announced this on Wednesday afternoon (February 7th). In three and a half years, Meunier had never really warmed up to the Ruhr area. His departure had been brewing for some time.

Borussia Dortmund is giving up Meunier

Eyes widened when BVB announced in the summer of 2020 that they had brought Thomas Meunier from Paris on a free transfer. The Belgian was in the Champions League final, was a regular player and had established himself in European football.

In Dortmund, however, there was soon no longer much to be seen. In black and yellow, Meunier often acted erratically and, above all, not consistently. Ultimately he only managed 86 competitive games. Because of his high salary, the club wanted to get rid of him in the summer.

An injury ruined that plan. Meunier stayed at Borussia Dortmund and was even a regular player again after his recovery! But it wasn’t enough to turn things around. Now Meunier is moving to Trabzonspor.

“Have complied with this wish”

“This week there was a short-term opportunity for Thomas to join a new club before the end of the transfer period,” explained sports director Sebastian Kehl. In Turkey the transfer window is open even longer.

“We complied with his request for this change,” said Kehl. The truth should also be that Dortmund is not reluctant to give up the player. In this way you can still save almost four million euros in salary.
