Christian Streich is resigning from his coaching position Bundesliga football teams SC Freiburg after the end of the current season. The 58-year-old said this in one video message, which the club published on its website.
He said it was the right time for new staff. The team needs this new energy. It was always very important to him not to miss the right time to stop, said Streich. He is firmly convinced that very good decisions will be made for the future of the club.
“I am extraordinarily grateful for the great support and affection that I have always received,” said Streich. He had hundreds of extraordinary experiences during his work and worked with hundreds of players. Streich said he was “full of gratitude” that he was able to experience all of this. “A big club, a great time for me – but now is also the right time to say goodbye.”
Streich took over the coaching position with the Freiburg professionals in 2012. He had previously been a youth coach at the sports club for 17 years. The greatest successes were reaching the cup final in 2022 and participation in the round of 16 of the Europa League in 2023 and 2024.
The former club president had to persuade Streich to take the coaching job
The former club president of SC Freiburg, Fritz Keller, feels “deep gratitude” for the work that Streich did. “He gave it his all and now he can take a break and gain a bit of distance,” Keller told Sky broadcaster.

Keller remembered how he once had to persuade Streich to move up from youth coach to professional coach. “I want to train and not just do public relations,” Streich told him at the time. That shows that he doesn’t take himself too seriously, said Keller.
“Bow before him”
Former players also praised the work of the Freiburg coach. “With Christian Streich, a person is leaving who turned a small club into a big one. He took SC Freiburg to a new level. He is practically the SC,” said former Freiburg striker Nils Petersen t-online. “A big gap, huge shoes to fill, which the club will now carefully fill.”
“I thank the coach for everything! Also for the fact that he has shaped us. Not just as a coach. I wish him a more than worthy farewell from the bottom of my heart and bow to him,” said Petersen.
Goalkeeper Oliver Baumann also reacted to the farewell announcement with emotional words. “He’s the one who helped raise me, I say, because I’ve known him since I was a teenager and how he wants to play football, what his attitude towards football is, that’s how he raised me up. I’m extremely happy with him for everything “Thankful, you can’t put that into words now, because it’s a lot more,” said Baumann, who worked in… Freiburg played.
